Two Earth Sciences Faculty Receive Awards

The School of Science Awards Committee has awarded the School of Science Teaching Award for Lecturers to Chris Thomas this year. Chris is being recognized for his effective use of his classroom as a laboratory in which he consistently learns how students best learn and what they best learn; for his experimentation with various teaching approaches; for his use and evaluation of teaching technology; for his impact across campus demonstrated by requests from other faculty for use of his online teaching templates; for his acquisition of grants and effective use of them to improve his teaching; and for his presentation and publication of his teaching approaches and discoveries at national venues—among other substantive reasons!

Congratulations to Kathy Licht who has won one of the School’s Trustees Teaching Awards. Kathy is being recognized for her continued involvement of undergrads as well as grads in her Antarctic research; for her enthusiastic involvement of youngsters across the country in online learning about the Antarctic; and for her involvement of secondary school teachers in workshops in which they experience the geology of Indiana so they can impart knowledge about geology to their own students. This year is the first year in which the Trustees Teaching Awards were not allocated one to each department, so it is noteworthy that Kathy ranked very high in our deliberations.
