The IUPUI graduate program in Geology leads to a Master of Science degree from Indiana University. Our terminal degree at the IUPUI campus is the Master of Science. As a result, our faculty are able to focus their attention on our Masters program student research. We offer a thesis and non-thesis option; however, typically only thesis-option students are considered for funding. Our thesis option requires 24 credit hours of graduate level courses and 6 credit hours of a research thesis. We have between 8-12 full-time graduate students per year.
Interested students should contact us prior to applying. If applicable, an appointment/visit can be set up for you to see our facilities and meet a few of our faculty. Students can apply with an interest in a specific faculty member or a group of faculty members. Admission decisions are decided by our graduate committee and not individual faculty members. Once you enter the program, you will take a majority of your courses in your first year. Also, you will choose your research advisor and submit your thesis (research) proposal. Your second year (including the summer) is focused on completing your research project and writing your thesis while finishing your course work.
What We Offer-These items are subject to change, but represent what our current grad students are offered. In addition to our research facilities and equipment, to support our graduate students we:
- Offer graduate funding and tuition waivers (see the links below for more information). Funding is typically offered over a two year period for a M.S. degree student; the graduate committee will alert students to their funding length and duties upon acceptance.
- Offer a travel stipend for a student to attend a regional or national conference
- Provide a student with both a desk and a computer in either our graduate office or one of our research labs.
- Support student research through assistance from our Laboratory Coordinator and Systems Engineer.
- Offer ease of Living. Compared to other urban universities, the cost of housing and apartments is low, and access and parking on campus is relatively easy (most of the time).
- Have diverse options for coursework. Students often take relevant courses in other programs at IUPUI, or courses at the main campus in Bloomington.
Contact Us- If you have a specific research area that you'd like to pursue as an MS student or want to talk directly to someone in our program, please submit a Graduate Program Inquiry. Your inquiry will be forwarded to appropriate faculty who will supply additional information on their research or answered by our graduate program director. |

If you are not familiar with IUPUI, read this general information about our campus, which also hosts our medical, dental, and law school.
- All official information about our masters degree, including what credits may transfer, what requirements are needed to graduate, etc. is found in the IUPUI Campus Bulletin for the School of Science Graduate Programs.
-
Students applying to the program must already have a Bachelors degree in the sciences or closely related discipline prior to starting (except those in the BS/MS program). For specific information on whether your prerequisite courses, GPA, and GRE fit into our admission requirements, contact us.
- The IU Graduate School has an official Academic Bulletin that lists faculty, general requirements and courses offered at IUPUI. However,---our website more accurately represents current faculty and courses.
-
Current Course Offerings are provided by the Office of the Registrar. The Class Search by Department option is easiest to use for finding current Geology offerings.
-
The IUPUI Online Course Description lists all Geology Courses with a short description and prerequisites.
-
If you are an International Student you MUST view the Office of International Affairs website prior to applying. This is a VERY IMPORTANT link because the university has specific financial requirements that must be met prior to applying for graduate study.
-
When you have decided to apply to join us, fill out the Online Application Form provided by the IUPUI Graduate Office. (scroll down to "Proceed to Online Application"). NOTE: The suggested application submission date is January 15th. Submission in mid-January maximizes the prospective student's opportunity to receive financial aid. However, the Geology Department will consider applications for admission throughout the year.
