Oceanography is an interdisciplinary science that explores
the chemistry of seawater, the characteristics of the seafloor, the
processes that created the oceans, human impacts on the ocean
environment, life in the ocean and more. In this course, we will attempt
to touch on many of aspects of our oceans to develop a well-rounded
understanding of this environment.
Course Management
-
This online course will be run entirely through
Oncourse. The syllabus, all lecture materials, and assignments
are provided through Oncourse.

No campus visits are required.
-
You must have access to a reliable computer with a
stable internet connection (no modems).
-
You should also have access to a back-up computer in
case yours fails (campus computers in
Student Technology
Centers are good back-ups)
-
The course is run on a schedule - you will have limited
flexibility in working ahead.
-
The course is taught through the textbook (you will
purchase this) and online learning modules (you will access these
through Oncourse using a web browser.)
-
There are approximately 20 learning modules in the
course – learning modules will include reading assignments, lecture
materials and assessment instructions.
-
You will complete 1-2 learning modules per week.
-
Your learning will be assessed in a variety of ways
including long quizzes, discussion forum postings, homework
assignments, essays, etc.
-
You will have at least one assessment due on a specific
day every week.
-
The amount of time given to complete an assessment will
range from 24 hours to 7 days depending on the assessment.
-
You will be required to complete a research option that
includes a researched paper.
-
You must be comfortable using the Internet and Oncourse
regularly.

An online course provides a convenient way to take a course on your own
time, however, online classes are not easier (nor more difficult) than
campus courses. To ensure success in this course, you must be able to do
the following:

Log in regularly –

Check Oncourse
every day for announcements, new discussions, and email messages

Set up a
routine to work in this course at time when you have the fewest
distractions.

Devote ample
time per week to complete all materials.

Participate –

Be active in
course discussions and chats.

Ask questions,
share ideas, contribute, and communicate.

Communicate in
a positive manner with both your classmates and your instructor.

Learn
and Think-

Read and follow
instructions completely and carefully.

Utilize all of
the resources provided including links to supplementary
materials.

Complete course
assessments in a manner that demonstrates understanding of the
concepts.

Think
critically – think beyond the basic material presented and apply
your knowledge.

Ask for help when you need it –

Contact the
appropriate people immediately when you have problems or
concerns.

awake at 2 am the morning before a due date.
