Research Funding
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program
The IUPUI School of Science Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (SOS UROP) is a School of Science program that offers a science major in the School the opportunity to work with a faculty mentor on a research project. Students who engage in undergraduate research learn through inquiry and experience in a chosen discipline with an intensity and depth not likely encountered in the classroom.
Visit the UROP homepage here.
North Central GSA
The GSA Foundation has awarded $4,500 to each of the six GSA sections. The money, when combined with equal funds from the sections, is used to assist both undergraduate and graduate student members of GSA.
Visit the North Central GSA
Student Grants website here.
CEES Internships
The Center for Earth and Environmental Science offers internships for undergraduate students to assist in CEES-sponsored research or to assist with CEES outreach and education activities. Internships announcements occur throughout the year and are sent within the IUPUI community to individuals or departments affiliated with CEES. To be included in these announcements, send a request to cees@iupui.edu
Graduate Student Funding
Applicants to our graduate program are only considered for funding or scholarships/fellowships after they have submitted an application into the program. IUPUI, like many other earth science graduate programs, supports many of its graduate students with a
competitive stipend, tuition waiver, and subsidized health care. Tuition waivers generally extend to cover in-state or out-of-state tuition. The sources of the funding come from various areas, including research grants, CEES, fellowships and scholarships, and teaching assistantships. The graduate committee determines which accepted students will receive funding and what type of duties he or she will perform their first semester.
Students
with teaching assistantships are given a faculty mentor, and involve either teaching 100-level laboratory
course(s) or managing a 100-level online course(s) with a time commitment of 20 hr/week. Graduate students that are near completion on
occasion teach a 100-level course on campus.
The number of students funded each year is dependent on several factors, so the number of students receiving funding can vary from year to year. Funding decisions are typically made in the spring semester for students planning to start the program in the fall. For more information on graduate funding, contact the
head of our graduate committee.
